Apple’s Vision Pro marks a before and after in the world of spatial computing, although its adoption faces significant challenges. After almost a month of use, I have explored its various functionalities, from light gaming to series marathons in the comfort of my bed. I even did a visual comparison with a 70mm projection of “2001: A Space Odyssey” to evaluate the quality of its micro-OLED displays. While the technology is impressive, it fails to fully replicate the experience of a movie theater.

I primarily used the Vision Pro for work, taking advantage of its ability to add virtual displays to my workspace, which sounded ideal in theory. However, I ran into functionality issues that made the experience more tedious than expected. Apple’s vision, which seems to put technology before the user experience, contradicts the philosophy of simplicity and accessibility that Steve Jobs defended.

On a trip to Barcelona, I tried to use the Vision Pro to work on the plane, facing complications with the travel mode and the interface in general. Despite times when the technology promised to improve my productivity, technical difficulties and physical discomfort after hours of use made me question its practicality.

Eye tracking and interaction with the virtual environment, although innovative, are not free of errors, which can lead to frustrations in daily use. Furthermore, the need to wear the helmet, along with its external battery and cable management, represents a significant barrier to its everyday adoption.

My experience with the Vision Pro highlights both its revolutionary potential in spatial computing and the obstacles Apple must overcome to make this device a practical and accessible tool for the average user. As technology advances, we hope to see improvements that make the Vision Pro a more viable option for the future of computing.

Looking ahead, the trajectory of spatial computing and devices like the Vision Pro is likely to be shaped by the feedback from early adopters and the iterative improvements made by Apple. The concept of a device that can seamlessly integrate with our daily lives, offering both unparalleled efficiency and a new dimension of interaction, is compelling. Yet, the realization of this vision hinges on overcoming the practical hurdles that currently loom large. As we stand on the cusp of this new era in computing, the dialogue between users and creators will be crucial in crafting a future where technology truly enhances human capability without compromising on simplicity and ease of use.
